2011 Inland Bays Horseshoe Crab Survey
Each year, the horseshoe crabs come ashore to spawn by the hundreds on the sandy beaches of our bays at the full moon and new moon in May and June. Researchers from all over the world travel to Delaware to observe this annual phenomenon on the beaches of Delaware Bay, but much less was known about the horseshoe crab spawning population on the Inland Bays.
In 2008, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays partnered with researchers at the University of Delaware College Of Earth, Ocean and the Environment in Lewes, to begin to answer questions about horseshoe crab spawning in the Inland Bays. Volunteers to conduct this citizen science were recruited and the Inland Bays Horseshoe Crab Survey was established.
This year, more than fifty volunteers will collect data at seven locations on the Inland Bays on twelve nights around the full and new moons in May and June. Each site has a volunteer leader and a team of volunteers to assist. If you would like to participate in the 2011 Survey, contact the site leader for the site where you would like to assist.
