       Advice and Advocacy

“The whole purpose of a democracy is that we may hold counsel with one another as not to depend on the understanding of one person but to depend on the counsel of all.”
— Woodrow Wilson, 1912

The Center's mission in public policy is based on its original mandate, as stated in the legislation that established it: "The purpose of the Center is to develop a long-term approach for the wise use and enhancement of the Inland Bays watershed."

Recognizing that water quality is affected by decisions on such issues as land use, agricultural practices and sewage treatment, the Center participates in public policy discussions that lead to legislative action.

With at least two dozen federal and state agencies and another dozen local governments with authority over various aspects of the Inland Bays watershed, the Center has an important task in helping to shape public policies that affect the bays.

By providing valuable information from its education, restoration and research missions, the Center can help policymakers better understand the complex factors that impact water quality.

By serving in an advisory role, the Center can help legislators craft better laws that will limit pollution, preserve habitats and promote environmentally sensitive development.

By going beyond an advisory capacity, the Center can serve as a vocal advocate for public policies that protect one of the state's most valuable resources - its Inland Bays.
